Pattern: Rowhouse Hat, by Bonnie Sennott
Yarn: Swans Island Organic Washable DK in Dove and Mushroom
Needles: US #4/3.5mm and US #5/3.75mm 16-inch circular needles, and US #4/3.5mm dpns
Knit in DK weight yarn, the Rowhouse Hat offers an easy introduction to stranded color knitting. The "rowhouse" motif is worked on a 16-inch circular, so there's no fiddling with doubled-pointed needles while you are knitting with two colors.
If one of your knitting resolutions for 2014 was to try some new techniques, why not start with stranded color knitting? You might find this KnittingHelp.com video helpful. I'd also recommend reading about color dominance in this Paper Tiger blog post, or this one from Knitting Daily. The pattern points you to additional resources, both in print and online.
Small two-color projects are great for stash busting (though I must admit, this Swans Island yarn only entered my stash very recently). When I saw this springy merino at Gather Here, I really could not pass it up. It was so soft, and the colors were so beautifully subtle. When he rang me up, the store associate asked what I was going to make, and I said, "I don't know—I think I'll design something with it!"
Some yarns stay in your stash for quite a while before you find the right project for them. But not this—I started swatching and sketching right away. I knew almost immediately it was destined to become a hat.
