What I'm Drawing Today

A gift waiting for me on my car window the other day is the latest entry in my ongoing Lost and Found sketchbook ...

Yellow Leaf

Leaf and Sketch_1

My sketchbook for the Sketchbook Project 2013 has arrived, and I've decided on a theme: The Circle Game.

Sketchbook Project

Circles will appear throughout the book and be the form that ties it all together. Thematically, the book will be about the circle of life in nature, with images and/or text about winter, spring, summer, fall. And the stages of human life will be part of it, too: infancy, childhood, adulthood, and old age.

I'm going to include all the media I love to work in: pencil, ink, maybe some watercolor, colored pencil, collage, embroidery, knitting, and crochet. It will have both abstractions and representational images and will be as full of life and joy as I can possibly make it. The sketchbooks must be postmarked by January 15; I plan to finish mine on January 13—which will be my 56th birthday.

I have to work out a few things before I begin—like deciding if I'm going to use the paper that's in the book or swap it out for drawing paper that I like better. You can do whatever you like with your book so long as you don't make it any more than an inch thick. And of course, it needs to be sturdy enough to travel around and be handled without falling apart.

It's not too late to sign up for the Sketchbook Project 2013—you have until October 31.

I'll sign off with links to some blog posts that I really enjoyed this week:
  • Maya wrote about inspirations that came to mind after she mistakenly said "permission ship" instead of "permission slip."
  • Kathrin shared a great video of John Cleese talking about the conditions necessary to foster creativity. She summarizes his thoughts, so if you're really pressed for time you can read the post and skip the 36-minute video. But I urge you to watch it. For one thing, he's brilliant; for another, you'll learn a bunch of great lightbulb jokes.
  • And Karin is giving away some really stunning yarn. Don't miss it!
