Socktoberfest, Day 31

Maybe the secret to finishing my Socktoberfest socks in October is to make anklets, and maybe also to make the socks for somebody else. Apparently, if socks are for me, I let them drag on forever, but if they're a gift I finish them quickly.

Lace Anklets for Mom

I finished these up a few days ago, but this post was delayed thanks to the little matter of an October snowstorm. Who would believe that the day before Halloween I would be clearing about a foot of heavy, wet snow off my car, after a storm that took out power, heat, everything? Including a tree I loved ... here's the birch tree in my backyard just after the first flakes began falling:

And here's how it looked yesterday morning and afternoon:

The fields around me are still covered with white. I thought the snow would melt fast, but it still looks like January outside. Trees and power lines are down all over town. I'm one of the lucky 35 percent or so of Amherst residents who have power back.

Mom, I'll be sending your socks next week along with some washcloths and embroidered sachets for your church craft sale. Here are the washcloths in progress:

And now, back to stirring my pot of applesauce. I'm making it thick and chunky, just like the applesauce I remember having at Ann Sather's on Belmont in Chicago, back in the 70s when it was the only Ann Sather's and Ann still owned it. I had never had applesauce so good. Until then, I thought applesauce was nothing special, really kind of boring. Ann Sather's applesauce was a revelation!

Such beautiful socks! I might have to knit those.. I also love the peaches & cream color combo for those washclothes. Perfection!

Oh, I'm so sorry about your tree! It's sad.
But the socks are gorgeous, as are the washcloths.
(((hugs)))
