I promised myself I could start something new once I'd reached a certain stage with the design projects. Today I got there, so in celebration I wasted no time winding up a skein of yarn:

Pattern: Pacific Shawl by Michele Bernstein
Yarn: Quince & Co. Tern (75 percent wool, 25 percent silk) in the Driftwood colorway
Needle: US5 Addi lace
This lovely shawl pattern offers the option of using beads when you work the lace edging. I'm trying to decide if I want to use them, and whether any beads I already have on hand would work:

The clear beads on the left and at center look very much the same, but they're two different brands, and the center ones are slightly larger and sparklier. The ones at right are transparent smoky amethyst. It will be a while before I have to decide which, if any, to use. Which would you choose?
I've had this pattern in mind since I saw it last fall at PDXKnitterati. Michele's blog is one of my favorites. Her tales of the knitting community in and around Portland are always a good read, and it's fun to experience the Pacific Northwest landscape vicariously through her photographs.
The clincher for me was reading the other day that she's donating 100 percent of proceeds from sales of the Pacific Shawl pattern to the Red Cross for earthquake/tsunami relief in Japan. How could I not buy the pattern and cast on? It's the perfect project for the Quince & Co. Tern (a fingering weight wool/silk blend) in my stash. And since the first part is simply stockinette, it won't distract me (too much) from the design projects that require most of my attention.
All in all, it's a win-win situation. Thanks, Michele!

No question in my mind....smoky amethyst!
Thank you for purchasing the pattern, and for blogging your knit!
For the record, I vote for the smoky amethyst, too. But you have lots of time to decide.
Knit on!
This is three for the smoky amethyst...but you shouldn't be a bit surprised that I'd say that...
I'm off to purchase the pattern!
(((hugs)))
I promise I was going to say smoky amethyst before I got here and saw all the other votes. This looks like a perfect reward project.
I like the smoky amethyst beads.
Following the crowd...haha...smoky amethyst!
Smoky amethyst would be my fav too, if you could only choose one. But my initial response was to use some of each, in some sort of rotation. They're all really lovely together with that yarn!
Pretty shawl! I love feather and fan.
Either way, beads are good!
I've wanted some Quince & Co, and may have to get this yarn. It's about time for my next fingering weight shawl.
