Leftovers Headband

What to do with 80-100 yards of leftover worsted weight wool (maybe even less)? How about a lace headband?

Headband_mischief

The recipe: Cast on 13 stitches. On every row, knit the first 2 sts and last 2 sts. If you like, use markers to set off these edge sts.

Rows 1 and 3: K2, slip marker, purl 9, slip marker, k2.

Row 2: K2, slip marker, k1, *yo, k2tog; rep from * to marker, slip marker, k2.

Row 4: K2, slip marker, *ssk, yo; rep from * to 1 st before marker, k1, slip marker, k2.

Keep going until the band is about 1 1/2 inches shy of fitting all the way round your head. Bind off. Block it. (Or, leave it on the needle and block it.) When it's dry, wrap it around your head for a little preseaming try-on.

Is it just right? Hurray! Sew the cast on and bind off edges together and wear. Too small? Too big? Undo your bind off (if you bound off) and either knit a little more or rip back a little. When it fits the way you like it, bind off for good and sew the cast on and bind off edges together.

Finished dimensions: 2 to 3 inches wide and however long it needs to be to fit your head comfortably.

What size needles?

Your needle size will depend on the yarn you are using. Depending on your yarn and whether you are a loose or tight knitter, you might use a US6, US7, US8, or even US9 needle. Work a few inches and see if you like the fabric you are getting. If not, go up or down a needle size.

I had some Christmas yarn floating around, and decided to try this. CUTE! the red/white/green fading into each other gives it almost a candy like quality, fun to wear near Christmas.
